"The Pink Pony Club is in Boston" - Chappell Roan

If you peeked into the Sinclair in Cambridge, MA on March 1st, you would find a sea of pink cowboy hats and a sold-out crowd dancing and screaming lyrics fueled by the music of Missouri-born Chappell Roan.

While it was a crisp 35 degrees outside, the venue was on FIRE. The night began with amazing performances by local drag queens Harlow Havoc, Lilly Rose, and Candace Persuasian. Their performances were high-energy, fantastic openers to get the crowd hyped for Chappell’s set.

Once Chappell and her all-girl band walked out onto the stage, the energy in the room was unmatched. Chappell’s set started with her February 2022 single “Naked in Manhattan” to get the fans dancing (not that it took much, we were all there to dance and sing our hearts out) and wound its way through her newer releases and a throwback to “Bitter” off of her first album. We were also treated to a breathtaking cover of “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette and some sneak peeks into this year’s upcoming releases, including a single, "Kaleidoscope", that’s set to come out at the end of this month.

After a brief break at the end of her main set, Chappell came back out to encore “California” and, of course, close the night out with “Pink Pony Club”. The concert was, in my semi-professional concert-goer experience, a certified good vibe. The fans were sweet, the performers were incredibly talented and confident onstage, and the playlist in between sets kept the party going.

A bonus to the night, and something I would love to see more in the future, is that on top of the donation that all Bowery shows give to and the Shout Syndicate, a local volunteer-run fundraising effort to assist with youth-based art programs in the Greater Boston area, a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to For the Gworls, a collective to help Black transgender people afford rent, gender-affirming surgeries, healthcare, and travel assistance.

Chappell Roan’s performance was phenomenal (femininomenal, if you will), and I think I speak on behalf of all of us at Hear Me Out when I say I can’t wait for new music, and for Chappell to come back to Boston.
